Other concepts like repetition rate multiplication (RRM) have been proposed, which also achieve a constant wavelength resolution but do not provide a continuous wavelength band which is essential for neutron imaging applications. In addition, the concept of an optically blind chopper pair for pulse shaping results in a constant wavelength resolution over the utilized spectrum, which is meanwhile state of the art for modern TOF reflectometers and SANS instruments at continuous sources ,, ,. The proposed chopper system combines the WFM technique with a pair of optically blind chopper discs (i.e. the second chopper opens exactly when the first chopper closes the beam) and thereby allows to adjust the wavelength resolution by varying the distance between the chopper discs . In this study we discuss the highly flexible chopper system to be installed at ODIN based on the concept of wavelength frame multiplication (WFM), which is able to access a continuous, broad wavelength range with the envisaged adjustable wavelength resolution Δ λ ∕ λ at the detector position. As a consequence of the long pulse, new requirements to a chopper system arise in order to utilize the time structure in an efficient way ,. 86 ms duration (compared to around 10–100 μ s at other spallation sources ,, ) at a low frequency of 14 Hz in order to significantly increase the integrated neutron flux . The ESS will deliver rather long neutron pulses of t P = 2. Additionally, a moderate resolution of up to 10% is required for techniques such as depolarization imaging and dark field imaging . The imaging beam line ODIN was therefore proposed as a day-one instrument to become operational together with the source in 2024 due to potentially very high gain factors for wavelength-dependent techniques compared to existing beam lines . The combination of the intrinsic wavelength resolution and the high brilliance render the ESS an ideal source for modern wavelength-dependent neutron-imaging techniques. BUILDING CHOPPER FRAME SOFTWARE FULLThe resulting neutron pulses allow full advantage to be taken of time-of-flight (TOF) methods in order to separate neutrons in time according to their wavelength. The European Spallation Source (ESS) is designed to become the world’s brightest pulsed neutron source, where neutrons are produced in a spallation target hit by an accelerated, pulsed proton beam. Furthermore, we present simulation results demonstrating the performance of the chopper system, implemented in the neutron guide system that is being realized for the imaging beam line ODIN at the ESS.
